1. VIDEO SURVEILLANCE
Middleware for Distributed Video Surveillance
Henry Detmold, Anton van den Hengel, Anthony Dick, Katrina Falkner,
David S. Munro, and Ron Morrison
This middleware approach supports large-scale, intelligent video
surveillance by partitioning systems according to an activity topology. _

2. FROM IEEE INTERNET COMPUTING: GUEST EDITORS' INTRODUCTION
Crisis Management
Sharad Mehrotra, Taieb Znati, and Craig W. Thompson
Multiple recent disasters have put crisis management in the limelight.
Consequently, many IT-related research efforts are under way to bring
transformational changes to first responder and response organizations'
ability to contain and mitigate crises. _

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ CALL FOR PAPERS
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

User-generated content can range from content created explicitly by the
user and uploaded to help shape their ubicomp experience through to
small contributions from large numbers of distributed contributors that
can subsequently be mined and analyzed. IEEE Pervasive Computing invites
submissions on all aspects of this theme.
The submission deadline is 1 May 2008.
For more information, see
_http://www.computer.org/portal/pages/pervasive/content/cfp4.html_.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

3. FROM IEEE INTERNET COMPUTING: WEB-SCALE WORKFLOW TRACK
Web-Scale Workflow: Integrating Distributed Services
M. Brian Blake and Michael N. Huhns
Modular applications, components, and services are all ways of
describing the product of an organization's efforts to embody its
capabilities in autonomous software modules. The application of such
distributed systems is only limited by imagination, but we must
understand existing research challenges and their implications to
various Web-scale workflow domains. _

4. EDUCATION
Computing Curricula for the 21st Century
Andrew J. Kornecki
In this time of the increasing role of software and proliferation of
computing in all areas of technology and human endeavor, there is
critical need for education of engineers who can understand the system
as a whole, appreciating both software and hardware and their mutual
connection._

5. TOWARD INTEGRATION
Serendipitous Reuse
Steve Vinoski
Is it feasible to arrange the primary elements of an area such as
enterprise integration in a way that encourages the development of
beneficial applications that the enterprise architects never dreamed of? _
__http://dsonline.computer.org/portal/pages/dsonline/2008/02/w1tow.html_

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ CALL FOR PROPOSALS
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

IEEE Internet Computing invites special issue proposals for the
2009-2010 editorial calendar.
The submission deadline is 1 March 2008.
For more information, see
_http://www.computer.org/portal/pages/internet/content/cfptheme.html_

6. NEWS
Are Social Networking Sites Growing Up?
Greg Goth
Researchers and developers are finding great opportunities in
youth-oriented sites—but grown-up issues are emerging.
_http://dsonline.computer.org/portal/pages/dsonline/2008/02/o2003news.html_

7. FROM IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON PARALLEL & DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS
Distributed Hashing for Scalable Multicast in Wireless Ad Hoc Networks
Saumitra M. Das, Himabindu Pucha, and Y. Charlie Hu
Current stateless multicast protocols aren't scalable to large groups
because of the per-packet encoding overhead and the centralized group
membership and location management. The Hierarchical Rendezvous Point
Multicast protocol significantly improves the scalability of stateless
multicast with respect to the group size. _

8. BOOK REVIEW
E-learning with Intelligent Agents
Maria Ganzha
A review of Designing Distributed Learning Environments with Intelligent
Software Agents _
