1. GUEST EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION
Rapid System Prototyping
Fabrice Kordon
The March, April, and May 2007 issues of IEEE Distributed Systems Online
will feature revised versions of the best papers presented at the 17th
International IEEE Workshop on Rapid System Prototyping (RSP 06).
http://dsonline.computer.org/portal/pages/dsonline/2007/04/o4007.html
2. MODELING LANGUAGES
System Prototype and Verification Using Metamodel-Based Transformations
Luis Pedro, Levi Lucio, and Didier Buchs
Mapping domain-specific languages' core concepts into the Concurrent
Object-Oriented Petri Nets formal specification language provides users
with the semantics necessary for developing prototypes for these DSLs.
http://dsonline.computer.org/portal/pages/dsonline/2007/04/o4001.html
3. FROM IEEE INTERNET COMPUTING: GUEST EDITORS' INTRODUCTION
Roaming: Technologies for a Connected Society
Vinny Cahill and Siobhán Clarke
We live in a truly connected society, at least in the Western world. The
challenge now, therefore, isn't to provide connectivity but to retain it
as users roam, potentially between unfamiliar and heterogeneous
environments.
http://dsonline.computer.org/portal/pages/dsonline/2007/04/w2gei.html
4. EDUCATION
Teaching Condor Grid Computing to Beginning Programming Students
Amy Apon and Matt Baker
University of Arkansas instructors taught grid computing to beginning
programming students using Condor. Students learned to write programs to
solve computational problems and to use Condor grid programming to solve
scientific problems.
http://dsonline.computer.org/portal/pages/dsonline/2007/04/o4002edu.html
5. FROM THE EDITORS: COLLABORATIVE COMPUTING COMMUNITY
Collaborative Web Computing: From Desktops to Webtops
Haifeng Shen, Zhonghua Yang, and Chengzheng Sun
"Webtop" applications combine desktops' rich functionality and
responsiveness with the Web's platform agnosticism and collaborative
accessibility.
http://dsonline.computer.org/portal/pages/dsonline/2007/04/o4003.html
6. FROM IEEE INTERNET COMPUTING: PUBLIC POLICY
Is E-Government Ready for Prime Time?
Stephen Ruth and Soogwan Doh
Every nation has some form of e-government process, but there's
considerable debate about whether it's even close to its potential.
http://dsonline.computer.org/portal/pages/dsonline/2007/04/w2pub.html
+++++++++++++++ CALL FOR EVENTS ++++++++++++++++++
IEEE Distributed Systems Online maintains a calendar of upcoming events
in the field.
To suggest an event for the calendar, contact Guillaume Pierre
(gpierre at cs.vu.nl).
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
7. FROM IEEE INTERNET COMPUTING: ENGINEERING THE WEB TRACK
Deploying Wide-Area Applications Is a Snap
Carles Pairot Gavaldà, Pedro García López, and Rubén Mondéjar Andreu
The Structured overlay Networks Application Platform (SNAP) offers easy
adaptation, a secure and decentralized deployment environment, and
transparent embedded services.
http://dsonline.computer.org/portal/pages/dsonline/2007/04/w2eng.html
8. FROM IEEE INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS: TRENDS & CONTROVERSIES
Social Computing: From Social Informatics to Social Intelligence
Fei-Yue Wang, Kathleen M. Carley, Daniel Zeng, and Wenji Mao
Social computing, a new paradigm of computing and technology
development, has become a hot topic attracting broad interest from not
only researchers but also technologists, software and online game
vendors, Web entrepreneurs, business strategists, political analysts,
and digital government practitioners, to name a few.
http://dsonline.computer.org/portal/pages/dsonline/2007/04/x2tac.html
9. NEWS
"Ring-Ring" Might Soon Mean Ka-Ching
Greg Goth
Industry proponents say a pay-by-mobile-phone ecosystem is tantalizingly
close.
http://dsonline.computer.org/portal/pages/dsonline/2007/04/o4004news.html
10. FROM IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON PARALLEL AND DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS
An Acknowledgment-Based Approach for the Detection of Routing
Misbehavior in MANETs
Kejun Liu, Jing Deng, Pramod K. Varshney, and Kashyap Balakrishnan
Routing protocols for MANETs are designed on the basis of the assumption
that all participating nodes are fully cooperative, but node
misbehaviors may exist. The 2ACK scheme helps detect routing misbehavior
and mitigate its adverse effects.

11. BOOK REVIEW
Geographical Mashups
Kevin Curran
A review of Google Maps Hacks by Rich Gibson and Schuyler Erle
http://dsonline.computer.org/portal/pages/dsonline/2007/04/o4005bks.html
12. BOOK REVIEW
Voilà, Your Network is IPv6 Enabled!
Rita Pužmanová
A review of Deploying IPv6 Networks by Ciprian P. Popoviciu, Eric
Levy-Abegnoli, and Patrick Grossetete
